Ryan Airfield is a general aviation reliever airport located 12 miles west of Tucson International Airport (TIA) at the intersection of Ajo Way and Valencia Road. It is part of the Tucson Airport Authority (TAA) airport system. The airfield was created in the 1940s as a training camp for the Army Air Corps.
After the war, the State of Arizona approached the Tucson Airport Authority about operating the airfield. The Authority and the State entered into a llease agreement, and in 1960 the State deeded Ryan Airfield to the City of Tucson, subject to the Tucson Airport Authority's existing lease. Today Ryan Airfield is one of the busiest airports in Arizona with a Federal Contract Tower, tiedowns for 300 aircraft, and a popular destination for recreational pilots.
